BIOGRAPHY


Robleto Merolla was born in Naples and studied voice at the “G.Rossini” conservatory in Pesaro where he was also the last student of the famous voice teacher Maestro Arturo Melocchi. He studied composition and piano as well.
He won, among other, the International Voice Competition at the Teatro Lirico Sperimetale of Spoleto with the highest score possible, receiving special prize from the jury, headed by Ildebrando Pizzetti. He made his debut in Verdi’s “ Simone Boccanegra ”on the season opening night. He received the “Noce D’Oro” at the Teatro Grande in Brescia as the revelation of the 1968 /69 seasons. Judged as the best tenor of 1970 he won the critic’s prize “Noce D’Oro” and the “ Verdi D’Oro” in 1971 in Parma.
He inaugurated 25 principal opera season in Italy and all over the world and created many roles in world premiers such as: “L’Ultimo Selvaggio” by Menotti at Venice’s La Fenice Theatre and “San Francisco” of Jacopo Napoli at Naples ‘ Teatro San Carlo. He was one of Nino Rota’s favourite singer and sung in the word premier of Rota’s Oratorio “La Vita di Maria ” at the Sagra Musicale Umbra under the composer’s direction, and the composer’s opera “Torquemada” at Naples’ Teatro San Carlo.
He has sung leading roles in major theatres all over the world: Teatro la Scala in Milan, Opera House in San Francisco, The Royal Festival Hall in London, the Teatro Real in Madrid, The Gran Teatro of Geneve , Gran teatro del Liceo in Barcellona, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Opera of Rome, the Teatro Comunale in Florence, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino , Teatro San Carlo of Naples, Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa, Teatro Massimo of Palermo, Teatro E.A.Pierluigi da Palestrina of Cagliari, Teatro Regio of Parma, teatro Comunale of Modena, Teatro Romolo Valli of Reggio Emilia, Teatro san Carlos of Lisbon, Tho Opera of Tolosa, The Sagra Musicale Umbra, and Music Festivals of Costanza, Budapest, Valençia, and Istanbul.
He has sung with Monserrat Caballè, Raina Kabaiwanska, Leyla Genger, Magda Oliviero, Antonietta Stella, Grace Bumbry, Tatiana Troyanos, Fedora Barbieri, Fiorenza Cossotto, Shirley Verret, Giuseppe Taddei, Ruggero Raimondi, Piero Capucilli, Cornell MacNeil, Aldo Protti, Renato Bruson, Boris Christoff, Nicolai Ghiaurov and Bonaldo Giaiotti.
He has sung under the direction of Antonio Votto, George Solti, George Prëtre, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Fernando Previtali, Giuseppe Patanè, Alberto Zedda, Vincenzo Bellezza, Nino Rota, Jersey Semkov, Peter Maag, Francesco Molinari –Pradelli , Efrem Kurtz andMstislaw Rostropovich
He has worked with famous stage directors such as Jaen-Pierre Ponnelle, Mauro Bolognini, Giancarlo Menotti, Pierluigi Pizzi, Sandro Segui, Filippo Crivelli, Renzo Giacchieri, Umberto Fassini, Virginio Puecher and Herbert Kraft.
He has made many recordings with major orchestras such as: the New Philarmonic of London, the Swisse Romande, The RAI Orchestras of Turin, Milan, Rome and Naples, The Spanish National Television Orchestra and the Buden Sinphonie Orchestra.
During his career he has performed operas by Verdi, Puccini, Bellini, Gluck, Monteverdi, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Spontini , Janacek, Liszt, Beethowen, Zandonai, Pizzetti, Petrassi, Menotti, Rota, Cherubini, Rossini ed Hasse and he was considered a specialist of Bellini’s “Norma” , “la Vestale” by Spontini, “ Fidelio” by Beethowen, “Jenufa” by Janacek and Puccini’s “Il Tabarro”.
He has made many appearances for Italian, Spanish, English, American, German and Hungarian television and has recorded many CDs.
As his own personal choice, at the top of his career, he left theatre when still young, and started dedicating himself to teaching at Conservatorio . After several years of teaching, among which the very last ones teaching the same classes as his late Maestro Arturo Melocchi , at “ G.Rossini” Conservatorio in Pesaro, he decided to start new artistic projects, with the aim of promoting amongst young people the love for this art. Naturally, one of these projects is Melocchi Academy.
